In 1980, Bob started his own benefit consulting and software development firms
in Vancouver providing consulting services to the BC educational and
entertainment sectors. His companies were sold to Sedgwick James/William M
Mercer in 1990.
Returning to Toronto, Bob worked as a consultant in the health-care delivery
sector specializing in the design and development of managed health-care
programs for large employers and Canadian insurance companies.
In 1997, Bob joined and joined the Actra Fraternal Benefit Society (AFBS) as
President and CEO. AFBS is the insurance and retirement company for the
Canadian entertainment sector, investing insurance and retirement assets for
performers and screenwriters across Canada.
During his more than 25 years as CEO, AFBS assets under administration increased
from $250 million to more than $1 billion, and AFBS became the largest member-
owned insurance and retirement company in the North American entertainment
sector.
In addition to expanding the footprint of AFBS to include the broader artistic
community, during his tenure at AFBS, Bob designed and implemented the AFBS
Arts & Entertainment Plan, and the AFBS Accident on Set program providing
workers compensation benefits for performers and stunt performers in seven of
the ten provinces where these performers are excluded from provincial workers
compensation. This program has become the industry standard in the Canadian
production business.
Bob is the Past President of the Canadian Fraternal Association and has served as
a director of a number of organizations including the Canadian Life and Health
Insurance Association (CLHIA), the Canadian Artists Network, the Canadian
Broadcast Museum Foundation, and the Creative Arts Savings and Credit Union,
PAL Toronto, and Performing Arts FutureCare.
